This is not the first down cycle in tech and it won’t be the last. I’ve been laid off twice and have laid off many engineers. Layoffs are a shock to the system, most obviously to the person let go, but also to those who remain.
If you have been laid off, I’m truly sorry. It feels personal even when it is not. Decisions were made higher up that did not pan out and this layoff is the result. It is hard to not have your confidence shaken but remember that you are the same person you were before. You have valuable skills and experience and you will find another place that needs them and you.
Layoffs are a harsh reminder that your company is not family, despite what the Careers page says. It is a business arrangement. You are selling your services. If you are currently employed, ask yourself if this is the entity you want to sell your services to now. Is it even the same company you joined?
